TEXT

Twenty kilometers north of the capital Doha, Lusail's Olympic City is made up of numerous sporting and residential facilities in anticipation of Qatar's possible hosting of the Games.

The site is located in the heart of one of Doha's important agricultural belts, established under Qatar's National Food Security Programme. This “farmed desert” is irrigated by a wadi which collects rainwater at irregular intervals and carries it from west to east towards the bay.

Taking into consideration the existing landscape, the architectural interventions are contained within a grid of hedgerows, thus arranging them within the territorial agrarian structure. The sporting facilities, including tennis, basketball, and handball courts, etc., along with the Olympic village, are rationally distributed within this agrarian parcel of land, placing them among orchards, retention basins, fields of crops... Successive rows of Casuarina and Eucalyputs trees form curtains of trees that function in multiplying the horizon lines and creating the illusion of spatial depth.
