TEXT

Located in Plan-les-Ouates, in the Geneva administrative canton, the headquarters and factory of Vacheron Constantin completed by Bernard Tschumi (BTUA) symbolizes a significant step in the development of the oldest and most prestigious brand of watches in the world, whose activity and production have gone on without interruption since the company’s founding in 1755.

The park was conceived with the central building as its origin. The structural orthogonal grid of the architecture is extended to the site in its entirety, organizing different landscape strata independently from the form of the plot. On the level of the ground, the mineral surfaces, lawns, and vast expanses of grass are delineated orthogonally, clearly differentiating a succession of areas, each with their own use.

An impressive stratum of trees is set up within a subdivision of the overall pattern. Though the composition is explicitly artificial, its design nonetheless introduces a subtle naturalistic element. The trees are distributed in varying density along the edges of the geometrical design that marks off the varying uses of the ground. The dividing up and placement of the different tree varieties serves in organizing the park landscape into successive horizon lines.
