In the northern part of Doha, the University Campus occupies an eight square kilometer agrarian pocket still untouched by urbanization. This desert corridor's lands remain heavily coveted. To the west, residential neighborhoods are in rapid expansion, while to the east lay a golf course and the lush gardens and private residences of the west bay valley lagoon. An old wadi stretches across to the north before joining up with Wadi Park in the city center.
The focus of the project lies in preserving this endangered rural fringe. A landscape strategy is developed which prefigures the urban development to come, basing itself on the already existing agrarian forms. Emphasizing and highlighting the ecological qualities of the site, the strategy aims at the creation of high-quality public spaces.
The topography and irrigation networks provide a diagram for plantings on the scale of the larger territory. Rational water management supplies a rustic plant setting, while trees weave a network of shaded paths and allow for the sustainable establishment of fauna (ornithological reserve) and local flora.
At the margins of the site, a fixed layout of canals delineates plot dimensions borrowed from agricultural rawdats. The layout links together nurseries, food crops, sporting and educational facilities, public gardens. This pattern fades away as it approaches the heart of campus. There is a freer composition in the plantings on the eastern side, where the lands are partially flooded and thus given over to more abundant vegetation.
