The Le Millénaire project located in the northern Parisian suburb of Aubervilliers, between Victor Hugo Avenue and the Seine Saint Denis canal, transforms a seventeen hectare area previously made up of old warehouses and abandoned industrial sites. The Antoine Grumbach led project is structured around a regionally focused shopping center, business and office buildings, as well as housing complexes.
The abundant use of plant life, with the composition of a thick and consistent covering, restores an immediate sense of visual unity to the former industrial site. Groves and vegetal alignments set off spaces in waiting, framing the implementation of architectural projects. They also function in connecting the project's spaces to the planted canal, constituting one of the first links to a planned landscape structure proposed at a much larger scale. A continuous granite ground emphasizes the unity of the public space.
The areas around the dock are treated according to their use and cardinal orientation. The northern bank is abundantly planted. Its mineral ground facilitates the daily flow of movement around the shopping center. The southern bank is bordered by two alignments which serve in freeing up a larger and sunnier lower quay, for unimpeded strolls around the office buildings. At the ends of this bank, a square and garden are home to markets and special events. The spaces encountered when traversing the urban blocks evoke the industrial and fluvial history of the site. Their rigorous geometry is highlighted by ornamental ponds and low plantings, which provide a large opening towards the canal.
