The RATP (Parisian public transport operator) bus depot located on Rue des Pyrénées was in need of modernization. Rebuilt on an old industrial building, the contemporary building has expanded its welcoming capacity, incorporating into its structure as well office space, a day nursery, and high school. Atop the roof areas of the maintenance workshops and bus parking lots, a garden establishes the presence of plant life within the heart of the urban block. It provides the employees of the surrounding offices a place of repose and immersion within a piece of reconstituted nature.
The arrangement and combinations of plants follow a classic stratification: large trees, smaller shoots, shrubs, ferns, grazing or climbing plants. This artificial recomposition, left freely to itself, will with time produce surprising and unfettered natural forms.
The flora utilized was chosen for its ability to adapt to the constraining factors of the patio, its low amount of light and lack of significant thickness to the top soil. An undergrowth vegetation with a shallow root system was therefore used to create a continuous herbaceous stratum. The appeal of the garden stems as well from its diversity of broadleaved and evergreen plant varieties, ensuring the presence of thick foliage throughout the year.
