TEXT

In Rezé, the area around the Renaissance Square intersection is the subject of a remarkable architectural project, part of a larger cultural development project of the Nantes-Saint-Nazaire metropolis. Designed by the architect Rudy Ricciotti, the auditorium covers a surface area of a thousand square meters. On a local level, the project will enhance the quality of a residential neighborhood now lost in a barren industrial peripheral area. The principal task of the project lies in reconnecting the public square to its surrounding urban context, from which it is separated by the notable presence of a tramway line. The discrete arrangement of the project respects the sobriety of the auditorium while reorganizing the flow of traffic in order to create a large and inviting public space.

To the south of the large square, pedestrian traffic and soft forms of transportation balance the presence of the tramway. Clear concrete paving stones running across the lanes of the tramway outline a path linking Avenue de Bretagne with Renaissance Square. North of the building, a parking lot of several dozen places is set up. Trees and shrubs demarcate the limits of the parking area, helping soften their presence on rue de Monti. An amelanchier orchard spreads over an evergreen ground cover, carpeting the slope until reaching the lower level of the steep-sided auditorium. The regular plantings surrounding the auditorium neither conceal it nor put it onstage. Visible and accessible from the inside, patio areas within form two woodland scenes whose surprising range of plants, from cordylines to drimys to tree ferns, complements the exotic wood casing of the building.
