Honoring the trees: A phased approach
The site of the new wine estate for 4G Wines is nestled in a valley along an expanse of gentle slope flowing down toward the river. The area boasts exceptionally fertile land and breathtaking views over the Franschhoek Valley landscape.
In Japan, tradition holds that great trees are inhabited by spirits. Goshinboku, or “sacred trees,” are symbolic trees in Shinto shrines. When architect Shigeru Ban discovered the mighty and majestic pine tree rising from the 4G property, it was only fitting to make it the spiritual anchor of the winery. The architectural composition incorporates concepts from both wineries and the local environment: the wooden columns and roof are reminiscent of trees, while wooden posts are bound by metal hoops to resemble wine barrels.
Phase 1: Developing a landscaped wooded strip. This new landscape is formed quickly and easily, creating the foundational element around which the rest of the landscape design can steadily take shape. This wooded strip incorporates both new and existing vegetation, providing lush, mature greenery from the very first phase of the project. Drawing inspiration from Tuscan agricultural landscapes, the strip frames the main stunning views while shielding areas of less aesthetic appeal.
Phase 2: Shaping garden rooms from rows of trees. Once the central wooded strip has been created, work can turn to developing the rest of the park. Rows of trees running horizontally along the slope are added to the strip, echoing the surrounding natural environment. These rows of trees create a series of spaces and garden rooms. Hiking trails wind through the upper slopes of the site, offering sweeping, scenic views over the valley.
Phase 3: Creating wooded edges. New wooded edges brimming with native species are woven into the topography of the site, firmly rooting the landscape into its surroundings. These edges mark the finishing touches in this rich tapestry of gardens and agricultural land. Inspired by the structure and size of Italian Renaissance gardens, a patchwork tapestry of orchards, meadows, fields, ponds, and gardens joins the growing landscape as it gradually unfolds.
