TEXT

HIA Airport City, located to the south of Doha, extends over a surface area of roughly 1000 thousand hectares. The masterplan conceived by OMA organizes this new segment of the city into a series of four circular districts. The districts, each with their own identity and home to distinct and separate functions, are distributed around both sides of the long vertebral spine of road infrastructure running parallel to the airport runways. Spreading over five hundred hectares, a “desert park” frames the districts, transforming their appearance into densely built oases. The landscape continuity here provides Doha with a major new public space. Within the dune-like hollows, groves inspired by the forms of natural rawdats, “garden” in Arabic, are arranged around rainwater retention basins which punctuate the walking paths at wet, shady points. The layered vegetation characteristic of these environments spreads equally throughout the gardens and large boulevards of these districts. This strategy of repeating the plant configuration aims at increasing the possibilities of outdoor activities as well as the ways of smoothly and pleasantly moving about and through the larger conglomeration.
