Euroméditerranée is an urban renewal project launched in Marseille in 1995. Over three decades, the industrial landscape of the coastal Joliette neighborhood has been drastically altered, making way today for a business district encapsulating the cultural and economic ambitions of the metropolis. Located between the new Joliette theater and the old flour mill, the design of the park is greatly constrained by the underground passage of the A5 motorway. The plant configuration and the creation of public spaces are used as a means of inscribing the new arrangements within a forgotten order. The pattern of plantings is determined by the lines and perspectives of the old organization of warehouses and of the quay. The center of the site is located within a depression, at the point where water collects from the surrounding terrain. A number of shallow basins follow upon one another to meet the major technical consideration of draining the ground and absorbing the rainfall of large ten-year storms. These elements confer nonetheless an undeniable aesthetic quality to the site, echoing in form the surrounding buildings that they reflect.
