Lined with landmarked buildings, the Ludwigstrasse boulevard designed by Leo von Klenze is steeped in history. Our redesign honors the iconic line of sight along this boulevard, while transforming the whole into a unified, open, and resilient public space. The uninterrupted 16-meter-wide thoroughfare is highly adaptable, making it ideally suited to everything from daily life to large events. With a view to celebrating the historical sense of place permeating the boulevard, the rhombus pattern on the paving is preserved, as are the pockets of trees that dot the length of it and provide structure to the whole. This tree layer is expanded, emphasizing the line of sight along the boulevard and shaping new gathering places. More than 300 new trees are planted, increasing species diversity with a range of native and climate-adapted species. Planted areas with permeable surfaces are designed in line with the “sponge city” concept: maximizing rainwater infiltration, retention, evaporation, and storage, while enhancing thermal comfort and improving urban microclimates. Inconspicuous and understated street furniture is installed along the iconic boulevard. The grounds around the Feldherrnhalle are remade into a vast, accessible public square, seamlessly woven into the larger redesign.
