Allées Jean Jaurès avenue is an iconic boulevard in the Toulouse metropolitan area, connecting the historic city center to the Canal du Midi canal and the Toulouse-Matabiau train station. Our redesign reduces vehicle traffic lanes, while adding new bike lanes along the tree-lined sidewalks and a 550-meter promenade along a central meridian. Beds brimming with trees and fragrant plants frame this new promenade, creating an effect suggestive of a “rambla.” The resulting pedestrian thoroughfare offers a welcoming space in the Toulouse city center, perfect for a wide variety of both daytime and nighttime activities. Regreened areas planted atop an existing underground parking lot boast lush layers of Mediterranean trees and shrubs. New maple and linden trees, planted in-ground, increase species diversity and enrich the existing rows of trees, which are preserved. The precise layout stretching from one side of the avenue to the other, the use of simple and resilient surfacing, the wide variety of plant species – taken together, these thoughtful design choices imbue this major boulevard with a strong sense of identity.
