TEXT

The Basilica of Saint-Sernin, a masterpiece of Romanesque art and architecture, is one of the most iconic monuments in Toulouse. Inspired by the archaeological remains in the basilica plaza, our redesign is shaped around highlighting the history of this place. The new basilica plaza is rendered calmer and more peaceful, making it easier to access residential and public buildings, including shops and public facilities. The plaza brims with new greenery, while a lush layer of trees grows along the perimeter. Our project redefines and reshapes the public spaces, using paving, plantings, street furniture, and lighting to more clearly differentiate the various street typologies, while taking into account usage and historical considerations. Together, the use of high-quality natural stone and native species restores the allure and legibility of the basilica plaza.
