TEXT

Charpak Park constitutes one of the founding elements of the landscape development plan for the Montpellier neighborhood of Port Marianne. Its planning allowed for the rapid completion of a retention basin to help control and contain the rises in the water of the two rivers crossing the area, while initiating the gradual transformation of the territory on a larger scale. The enclosed basin is surrounded by embankments of trees, whose structure has evolved over a period of more than two decades. Arranged according to a fixed layout of varying density, the different species of plant are separated into groups, creating different “rooms” from the manner in which they are planted, which can function as play and relaxation areas. These meadows and wooded areas are managed utilizing techniques of forestry and agriculture. In this intermediate state of theirs, they evoke a landscape in the countryside. Once the trees reach full maturity, their stratum will have evolved throughout the park into large new areas of unplanned groves.
