TEXT

Thiers Square, adjoining the train station, functions as the essential link between a number of Nancy's public spaces. While respecting its already present identity, the redevelopment project of the square aims at the introduction of designs adapted to the extremely diversified current functions of its public space, as well as to its many different flows of traffic.

Two noble spaces are created as a result. The first, the “upper parvis”, is reserved for pedestrians and soft forms of transportation; the second, the “lower parvis”, is reserved for cars and taxis. The separation of these modes of transport is not intended as categorical, and in fact the design of the lower parvis pays particular attention to the creation of space for pedestrians and bicycles in the parking lot area and train station access point.

The vegetation becomes thicker moving across the parvis, which serves in linking République Square to the gardens along Claude Le Lorrain quay. The central space is open and spacious, framed by two asymmetrical galleries made out of rows of trees providing shade.

Two lower plant strata, one of shrubs and one of various herbaceous plants, reinforce the vegetal presence, dotting the site with welcoming resting areas. These plentiful gardens nonetheless leave to view Thiers Square in its entirety, and are spatially organized for a smooth transition onto the axis road running from the city center to the train station.
