A public road cuts across this vast New England property. A dozen buildings have been built along it, constituting a kind of miniature urban spread. The main house, and the significant transformations of the surrounding landscape undertaken during the last thirty years, have altered and distorted the existing site. This main house will be replaced, but before the architectural work begins, the owner wishes to reorganize the landscape, taking into consideration especially the arrangement and placement of the buildings. His requests are surprising: to make use of the ambiguity existing between the farm and the estate, while bringing about a smooth transition between the traditional New England typology and modernity. He is more concerned with the creation of coherence and meaning, than with an aesthetic or decorative result.
