TEXT

The construction of the east T3 tramway provides the opportunity of improving the existing profile of Poniatowski, Soult, Davout, Mortier and Serrurier boulevards of eastern Paris. The axis of the tramway crosses an extremely diverse and heterogeneous urban fabric, made up of old suburbs, industrial pockets undergoing transformation, and more recent urban development zones (ZACs in France). This urban periphery is interspersed with sizable landscape formations: squares, the Bois de Vincennes, Charonne garden, and the Campagne à Paris, to name a few.

The planning designs of the large roads surrounding the T3 line form into a linear park, in extension from the southern tramway. They seek to preserve the alignments of majestic trees that once formed the boulevards into a unity, and which today are weakened by recurrent, monospecific, devastating epidemics. In order to avoid more cutting down of trees and the intermittent disappearance of the plant presence, the lateral alignments are recomposed out of diverse varieties (ostryan, gleditia, gymnocladus, corylus, etc.). When the width of the sidewalks allow it, regular plantings of carpinus betulus fastigiata function in unifying the succession of heterogeneous facades and public and private gardens that dot the different urban blocks.

Lastly, along both sides of the Haussmannian alignments, a garden stratum is imagined. Small flowering trees, such as Persian Lilacs and Eastern Redbuds, are randomly planted in major public spaces and around the main stations. Those strolling through this garden stratum will experience a space of varying textures and spectacular springtime flowerings.
