The Belvédère-Cités, Villerupt urban redevelopment study is part of the vision of the Alzette Belval landscape framework plan. The study area, located along the northern hillside of Villerupt, inhabits the meeting point between the Micheville urban development zone (the Micheville ZAC), the downtown area, the Alzette Valley, and the environmentally sensitive area of the Micheville brownfield.

Historically, the urban morphology of company towns has uniquely intertwined city and landscape. Here, breaks in the built environment form windows with open views over the Alzette Valley and the opposite hillsides. A network of stairways and alleyways along the hillside provides footpaths, which cross courtyards occasionally planted with majestic trees. With these key symbols of local identity in mind, the Belvédère-Cités redevelopment project aims to create expanses of landscape, visual, and physical continuity between this hillside environmentally sensitive area and the developing downtown area in the valley below. Rooted in the abundant variety and richness of the existing environments, our design plan seeks to revitalize the area’s industrial, urban, and landscape heritage. Ever-changing geographies, historical infrastructure, and industrial heritage – all are potential spaces for this renewal. The approach calls for a meticulous and thoughtful transformation of the network of existing public and landscape spaces.
