Forum UZH, designed by architecture firm Herzog & de Meuron, houses the law, economics, and modern languages departments of the University of Zurich. The complex comprises a large, multi-story plinth with teaching seminar rooms, and a dedicated research center that rises from this base structure. The two constructions are connected by a shared hub: the Forum. The infrastructure necessary for a lush landscape and the accompanying weight load was woven into the architectural design at the outset of the project. The rooftop of the plinth structure, which forms the surface of the Forum, is designed in a sequence of rising and falling slopes to create the pockets of soil needed for growing trees. Yet while these subsurface slopes are meticulously engineered to accommodate growing medium, the Forum ground above shows no trace of them. Groves of trees enrich the wooded canopy in the atrium, creating a new public space in harmony with the campus.
